Annuals & Perennials
Customers from all over Tidewater return year after year because of our selection of unusual annuals and perennials. We annually search for new varieties- but you can always find your "old favorites" here as well. Remember that we carry a size for every pocket book.

The past few years we've become more interested in tropical looking plants (many hardy in this area), and we have a large tropical display garden to inspire you. Visitors really love the two varieties of hardy bananas, the spectacular Brugmansia and towering Arundo donax.

We specialize in tough sun-loving daylilies and carry over 100 varieties- from pricey "cutting-edge" to less expensive plants ideal for mass planting.  Make sure to select early, mid and late varieties to extend the flower show.

Our wide selection of perennials for shady sites includes the common tried-and-true plants your grandmother grew plus several you probably haven't heard of.

Visit us in April for the best selection of herbs in Tidewater, plus a great selection of water plants and fish. Available in the spring our koi, comets, and shubunkins are reasonably priced. We buy the smaller sizes of fish to keep your cost down - plus you get to watch them grow bigger each year.

We carry hundreds of tough but beautiful perennials for any garden situation, plus we'll be happy to help you create "portable beauty" with lush containers. Remember that if you don't find what you want when you visit us we'll do our best to locate it for you. To view pictures and descriptions of perennials we have or can get, go to our links page and click on Sandy's Plants or Riverbend.

rare and unusual plants

Tropical Treats- We've been adding to our selection of elephant ears for years and always recommend their use in colorful containers. Our tropical and hardy bananas are very popular as are our Brugmansias (Angel Trumpets)

Website Coleus.JPG

Annuals-We have a huge assortment of annuals for any situation. The proven Winners line is exceptional and we add their new introductions every year and we're never disappointed. We think you'll like them too.

Website Daylily.JPG

Daylilies-With proper plant selection you can have daylily blooms in Tidewater from May through October. Some of our employees are members of the Tidewater Daylily Society and have a wealth of information. We offer a wide selection of spiders, doubles, bitones, rebloomers and gorgeous "eyed" cultivars to choose from.

Website Iris.JPG

Iris-Iris is Greek for rainbow, and we have a wide selection of this beautiful perennial- from the graceful Siberian to the amazing reblooming bearded varieties. The latter never fails to amaze our customers in the mid to late fall as they discover them in our gardens after the mums have finished.

hosta 1 ws.JPG

Hostas-With over 60 varieties of this shade-lover, you're sure to find a few to add to your garden. Hostas will grow in ordinary garden soil and withstand drought, but they are most beautiful when provided with ample moisture and organic matter. Light fertilizer in early spring is needed for best plant development.

Website Helleborus.JPG

Helleborus- The Perennial Plant of the Year for '05 is an evergreen perennial we've loved for years. Its late winter/early spring bloom has always made it a "connoisseur" plant for those gardeners wanting to extend the season of bloom in their shady areas. Now everyone can discover the attractive shiny foliage and bell-like flowers. We carry many of the latest strains including doubles.

Houseplants- Our greenhouse is stocked year round with large floor plants to small table plants to brighten your home. We usually have some beautiful bloomers to add color too! Did you know we rent Palms and other plants for weddings and special occasions?

Grass1.jpg

Ornamental Grasses- Graceful yet tough, these perennial companions thrive in full sun and are drought tolerant once established. The airy pink Muhlenbergia capillaris is a sell-out in the late summer once the flower heads burst open. From the petite (at 11" tall) Pennisetum 'Little Bunny' and Miscanthus 'Little Kitten' to the towering Arundo donax (5'-7' tall), we have a selection for your garden. We love grasses mixed with perennials, too!

jap paint fern 000.jpg

Ferns- Nothing imparts a cool, airy feeling to the shade garden like this group of plants. We love the evergreen ferns- Christmas, Autumn, Holly and Tassel- but also find the delicate shadings of Japanese Painted fern a winner when combined with maroon foliage perennials like Heuchera. If you like lacy, light green foliage try Lady fern (Athryium filix-femina). Southern Shield fern is a graceful native with bright green fronds that turn bronze in the fall. With over 25 varieties you're sure to find one to love.

Fish & Water Plants- Ponds and water features are increasing in popularity every year and spring is a great time for you to "get your feet wet". We carry a great selection of bog, marginal and tropical plants for your pond. We can also show you how to make a "natural" plant filter. The Hard Goods department is stocked with great pond products to keep everything running smoothly, too.

WE ARE A RETAIL GARDEN CENTER, THEREFORE WE DO NOT SHIP OUR PLANTS
