The Rare, Unusual and Underused |
The following is a short list of some of our favorite plants that we feel should be planted more often and do well in our varied climate. |

| Encore Azaleas (Rhododendron x) These new azaleas are revolutionizing local landscapes offering beautiful color in Spring and then again in Fall. They are available in many colors and sizes and are just as easy to grow as regular evergreen azaleas. |

| Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus) This small tree is one of our best native trees. Easy to grow and pest free, fleecy white blooms appear in May. CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGE |
| Poet's Laurel (Danae racemosa) Also known as Alexandrian Laurel, this hard to find plant is the laurel mentioned in classic literature. It has beautiful evergreen foliage with orange/red berries in the fall. Easy to grow in shaded locations. |
| Sango Kaku Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku') Coral Bark Maple is the other name for this outstanding selection. The younger branches are a bright coral red and are especially striking in winter. The fall foliage color can be red to orange or yellow. |
| Lady Banks Rose (Rosa banksiae 'Lutea') Grown in Virginia since the 1800's, this thornless climbing rose is covered with lots of butter yellow blooms in early spring. It is vigorous and virtually carefree. |
| Pee Dee Gold Ingot Liriope (Liriope muscari 'Pee Dee Gold Ingot') A sell out every time we get this in. Bright chartreuse foliage and lavender flowers really wake up shaded areas. |
| Merritt's Supreme Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Merritt's Supreme') Intense red to purple or blue mophead flowers on a dense compact, nearly dwarf shrub. There may be more unusual hydrangeas out there, but this one has proved extremely reliable for us. |
| Rice Paper Plant (Edgeworthia chrysantha) This is an unusual plant that blooms in mid-winter. The silver buds form in late fall and hang upside down on the bare branches. Sweetly scented yellow flowers open in February. CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGE |
| Chinese Abelia (Abelia chinensis) If you want butterflies, you want this shrub. White flowers bloom in mid to late summer and age to an attractive dusty rose color. Very fragrant! |
| | Orange Flowering Tea Olive (Osmanthus fragrans aurantiacus) Many are familiar with the achingly sweet tea olive with its small but powerful white flowers. Now imagine the same shrub covered in salmon-orange flowers. |

| Swane's Golden Italian Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens 'Swane's Golden' pp#3839) This plant is like a bright yellow green exclamation point. It will punctuate your landscape with its evergreen foliage. CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGE |
